AASSC 41st Annual Conference: May 29 - June 1, 2023

The 41st annual conference of the Association for the Advancement of Scandinavian Studies in Canada (AASSC) will be held at York’s Keele and Glendon Campuses in Toronto, Ontario from May 29 to June 1, 2023.

The conference website is: https://www.federationhss.ca/en/congress/congress-202.

Indigenous protocols for Congress 2023 can be read here: https://www.federationhss.ca/sites/default/files/2023-02/Indigenous-protocols-Congress-2023.pdf

Theme: The overall theme of Congress 2023 will be Reckonings and Re-Imaginings. Drawing on the lessons of Black Lives Matter, Idle No More, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, Congress 2023 will focus on new reckonings for how to live in non-hierarchical relationships that respect our human differences, while protecting the environment we depend on. In recent years, our conferences have included research from the fields of anthropology, archaeology, business studies, folkloristics, geography, history, Indigenous studies, linguistics, literary studies, medieval studies, philosophy, political science, religious studies, and sociology, among others. Further details about the conference’s keynote speaker will be available during the Winter.

Submissions: The AASSC invites papers/presentations of 15–20 minutes duration, to be followed by an additional 10 minutes of discussion time. Papers/presentations may be given in English or French and can be presented either live or pre-recorded. We also encourage participants to think about different ways to present their research. For example, a panel session in which a group of presenters make their research material available (e.g., written papers, PowerPoints, recordings, etc.) to the other conference participants on demand and engage in a live discussion/Q & A session; a poster session; or a film showing followed by a panel discussion. We welcome other kinds of artistic proposals that depart from traditional academic formats and research methods.

Deadline: The deadline for submission of proposals is February 15, 2023, through e-mail only. Submissions should include the title of the paper/presentation(s), an abstract (150–250 words), the author’s or authors’ name(s) and affiliation(s), a very brief bio or bios, and updated contact information. Please email your submission to the Chair of the AASSC Program Committee at: matthew.etherington@twu.ca

Time Zones: We will be following Eastern Time, as the conference is held in Toronto, Ontario, however time differences for any remote presenters will be considered when developing the schedule. Remote presenters living in these other time zones will be given priority in timeslots that are more convenient for their participation.

Fees: There is a registration fee for participating in the conference, and all presenters and audience members must be paid-up AASSC members by May 16, 2023. You can become a member or renew your membership through the association’s website at the following link: (https://www.aassc.com/membership). You can also donate to AASSC/gift a membership here: (https://www.aassc.com/Donations).

Funding: There are funding opportunities for in-person presenters. The Congress Graduate Merit Award facilitates the participation of graduate students in Congress activities. Each association planning to hold a conference at the event will receive a set number of CGMAs, each worth $500, to support their most deserving student members. For information and applications, please visit the Congress funding page or contact AASSC.

Childcare: There will be childcare and dependent care subsidy during Congress. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any comments or questions you might have.

See you there!
